Stephanie Kong

Stephanie (she/her) is a Vancouver-based Costume Designer. She is a University of British Columbia graduate with a BFA in Theatre Design & Production. Before beginning her BFA studies at UBC, Stephanie earned a Diploma in Stagecraft & Event Technology at Douglas College. It’s been almost 11 years of working in the Theatre and Television industries on the west coast and this time has been filled with adventure, creativity, inspiring stories, and beautiful people.

While on her own constant journey of learning and growing, Stephanie has a soft spot for spearheading opportunities to create costuming roles that are valued equitably regardless of gender, while concurrently establishing positive work environments and uplifting emerging artists through mentorships.

IN TELEVISION

Stephanie has created costumes for SYFY’s The Magicians for Seasons 2-5 and she was nominated for a CAFTCAD* award for her work as a Cutter on The Magicians Season 4 in the “Excellence in Building” category. More recently, she worked as the Head Cutter on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Seasons 6-7 focussing on a mixture of contemporary, period, and fantasy costumes.

Currently, she’s focusing on other parts of the costume department venturing into Assistant Costume Design and On Set experiences to further broaden her horizons and learn from the multi-talented and skilled costumers Vancouver has to offer.

IN THEATRE

Stephanie is primarily focussed in Costume Design. She has designed for many theatre companies in British Columbia such as the Arts Club Theatre, Western Canada Theatre, Pacific Theatre, Theatre Under the Stars, and Carousel Theatre for Young People. In her design process, the focus is always how to best tell the story and how to have a fun time doing it. Costumes fill a production with colour, grounds the characters and hints to where those characters journeys might lead. She hopes her designs are a source of inspiration for each actors performance, and provides groundwork for the audience to absorb the subconscious reality of how personal an outfit can be.

AFFILIATIONS

Stephanie is a member of IATSE 891 (Costume Dept), IATSE 118 (Costume Dept), and the CAFTCAD* West Committee (Volunteer)
